Khatabook vs JewelKhata

Khatabook is a free, generic udhar (credit) ledger used widely across Indian small businesses. JewelKhata is purpose-built for jewellery shops. The right pick depends on whether you need a ledger or a workflow.

When Khatabook is the better choice

Khatabook is the right pick if you only need to track who owes you how much, you do not need to record purity or hallmark, and you do not care about the difference between an order and an invoice. It is free, and free wins for that simple use case.

When JewelKhata is the better choice

JewelKhata wins the moment you need to record weight + purity + making charges + stone details + payment method history per order, all encrypted at rest with a Decoy PIN that no competitor offers. The 3-day free trial is enough to see the difference.

Bottom line

If you only want a digital udhar book, stay on Khatabook — it is free and good at that job. If your shop sells jewellery and you find yourself writing weight, purity, and hallmark into the notes column, you have outgrown Khatabook and should try JewelKhata. The 3-day trial costs you nothing to test.

How to move from Khatabook to JewelKhata

  1. Export your Khatabook ledger from the Settings → Export menu in the Khatabook app (CSV).
  2. Install JewelKhata, set your PIN, and (optionally) set a Decoy PIN.
  3. Add your customers manually from the CSV — Khatabook does not capture jewellery-specific fields, so importing line by line lets you also fill in purity and weight while you migrate.
  4. For active orders only, recreate them in JewelKhata with the locked gold rate. Older closed transactions can stay in the Khatabook export as an archive.
  5. Allow about 30 minutes for a shop with 30–50 active customers.
